이 교수가 신 물질을 찾는데 이러한 연구절차를 거치는 이유는 흡연이 흡연자에게 일차적으로 영향을 미치는 생리적 피해가 스트레스 등을 받을 때처럼 몸 속에 생성되는 활성산소에서 비롯됐기 때문이다.

The reason Dr. Lee researched the process to find new substances was that the primary physiological damage of smoking to smokers is caused by the reactive oxygen species created by smoking cigarette.

이 교수가 다음으로 연구대상을 고려한 것은 담배를 끊는데 있어 가장 어려운 걸림돌작용을 하는 금단현상을 어떻게 효율적으로 줄일 수 있는가 였다.

The next consideration of Dr. Lee’s research was a way of reducing withdrawal symptoms that is the most difficult obstacle to quit smoking. Dr. Lee settled the issue by the concept of ‘Time and Concentration’.

금단현상을 유발시키는 니코틴 수용체는 흡연자가 금연을 시도함에 되면서 니코틴의 농도가 낮아짐에 따라서 그 니코틴 농도에 대한 민감도가 점차 증가하게 됩니다. 그리고 경우에 따라서는 니코틴 수용체 숫자 자체도 증가시키게 되는데, 따라서 이러한 현상으로 흡연자가 금연에 성공하지 못하고, 니코틴 중독에 빠져들게 되는 것입니다. 이때, 니코틴 농도가 감소하는 것에 대해서 수용체가 반응하는 데는 다소 시간이 걸림으로 니코틴을 빠르게 배출시킴으로 해서 이 금단현상을 극복하고자 하는 전략을 세우게 되었습니다.
<Dr. Lee’s Comment>
When a smoker attempts to quit smoking, sensitivity of nicotine receptors causes withdrawal symptoms and these symptoms increase gradually by reducing the concentration of nicotine. In a certain event, the number of the nicotine receptors itself is increased, therefore the smoker can’t quit smoking and falls again into nicotine addiction. We worked out a strategy to overcome the withdrawal symptoms by discharging nicotine rapidly out of the body, since it takes time more or less time for the receptors to respond to the decrease of nicotine concentrations.

따라서 1차로 선발된 한약재중 니코틴 분해력이 높은 한약재를 2차적으로 선발하고 분해된 니코틴을 신속하게 몸 밖으로 배출시킬 수 있도록 하는 니코틴 배출작용을 촉진시키는 방향으로 연구를 추진했던 것이다.
Consequently Dr. Lee has proceeded to promote the discharging action of nicotine in order to promptly exhaust the degraded nicotine out of body by formulating medicinal herbs from the initially selected ones.

이 교수는 이 같은 발상은 담배를 끊는 대신 니코틴을 몸 안으로 주입하는 기존의 금연보조제품의 기능과 반대로 몸 밖으로 배출시키는 작용에 초점으로 둔 것이어서 일반적인 상식으로는 무리한 연구계획이 될 수 있었다고 말했다.

Dr. Lee said that the conception of discharging nicotine out of body was opposite to the conventional stop-smoking supplement products that induce nicotine into the body, and his research plan seemed to be an unreasonable and impossible one.

그러나 이 교수는 이 가설이 흡연자를 대상으로 한 임상인체실험에서 획기적인 결과를 나타내 과학적으로 효과를 입증됐다고 밝혔다.

But Dr. Lee’s hypothesis was scientifically proven by the remarkable results of the clinical trials on smokers.

저희 제품의 효과를 입증하기 위해 실시된 국 내외 임상실험에 대해서는 100명의 흡연자를 대상으로 실시하였습니다. 이때 약 40%의 흡연자가 금연에 성공하였는데, 획기적인 것은 이들 흡연자가 전혀 부작용을 느끼지 못하였던 것입니다. 그리고 이태리에서 실시한 임상실험에서도 약 65%의 흡연자가 금연에 성공하는 획기적인 결과를 얻을 수 있었습니다.
<Dr. Lee’s Comment>
We have performed the clinical trials on 100 smokers in Korea and abroad to prove the effect of our product. Through the trials, around 40% of smokers successfully quit smoking, and amazingly they did not feel any side effects at all. We got the remarkable result of approximately 65% of smokers to successfully quit smoking at the clinical trial in Italy.

이 교수는 이 실험을 통해 니코틴에 농도에 따른 금단현상의 on/off 이론을 정립, ‘NPL-X’(제품명 노스모)가 금단현상을 억제한 원리를 밝힐 수 있었다고 주장했다.
Dr. Lee declared that his team established the On/Off theory of withdrawal symptoms of nicotine concentration through the experiment and could identify the principle that NPL-X(Brand: NOSMO) uses to restrain withdrawal of symptoms.

흡연자가 금연을 실시함과 동시에 흡연자의 체내의 니코틴 농도는 매우 빠른 속도로 떨어지게 됩니다. 그러나 이 낮은 농도의 니코틴은 몸 밖으로 잘 배출 되지 않고, 오랜 기간 동안 체류하게 됩니다. 이들 니코틴 농도가 50~300nM 정도에 도달하게 될 때 체내에 있는 니코틴 수용체는 원래 흡연자가 체내에 보유하고 있던 니코틴 농도만큼을 다시 회복하려는 신호를 뇌 쪽으로 보내주게 됩니다. 이러한 신호가 외부적으로 들어나는 현상이 바로 흔히 말하는 금단현상입니다. 따라서 흡연자는 금연을 하는데 있어서 매우 크게 고통을 받게 되는 것이죠. 따라서 금연에 어떻게 성공할 수 있느냐 하는 것은 이 농도의 영역을 얼만큼 빠르게 벗어나게 해주냐 하는 것입니다. 저희 제품은 니코틴을 신속하게 배출시킴으로 해서 체내에 있는 니코틴 농도를 빠르게 낮추어 줌으로 해서, 이 농도의 영역을 신속하게 벗어나게 함으로 해서, 흡연자가 고통 없이 금연에 성공할 수 있게 되는 것 입니다.
<Dr. Lee’s Comment>
The concentration of nicotine in a smoker’s body is rapidly decreased when he stops smoking, but small amount of nicotine is not easily discharged from human body and remains for a long period of time. Nicotine receptors in the body send signals toward the brain to recover the original nicotine concentration in the body. This phenomenon is called the withdrawal symptom. Then the smoker suffers from the pain from quitting smoking. Accordingly, the key to successfully quit smoking is how fast the smoker can get out of the area of the concentration. Our product enables smokers to be successful when quitting smoking by exhausting nicotine rapidly, reducing the concentration of nicotine and relieving of the area of concentration sounds weird quickly.

이것은 흡사 전기 전극과 비유할 수 있으며 두 전극이 붙어있다 살짝 떼어두면 스파크가 계속 일어나는데 이를 빠르게 떼어 멀리 분리시키면 스파크가 일어나지 않는 원리와 흡사하다고 했다.
It can be compared to electrodes; the phenomenon looks like electric sparks between two close electrodes. However, when the electrodes don't spark when they are further apart.

이 교수는 이 결과와 가설이 2편의 특허로 이미 등록됐으며 미국, 일본, 중국, 유럽32개국에 국제특허가 출원됐고 다수의 국내외 저널에 그 성능과 효과를 보고한 바 있다고 전했다.
Dr. Lee’s result in the experiment and hypothesis has been registered with 2 patents and the international patent was filed in 32 countries including the United States, Japan, China and EU countries. The function and effect were reported by numerous news papers in Korea and foreign countries.

이 교수는 이번 원료물질 등록과 NDC 부여로 국내 보건산업기술의 우수성을 세계에 널리 알릴 수 있는 계기가 됐으며 이 기술을 활용한 제품 수출로 기업의 매출 및 수익성 제고에 기여할 것으로 내다봤다.
He expected that the registration of the raw substance and NDC would be a good opportunity to advertise the excellence of Korean technology in the field of heath industry throughout the world, enhance the sale and profit of the company by exporting the products utilizing the technology.

한편 이 교수는 후속 연구로 한방금연차 성분 중 금단현상을 억제시키는데 주된 기능을 발휘한 핵심성분을 규명하는 연구를 계획하고 있다.
In the meantime, Dr. Lee has done follow-up research plans to identify the chemical structure of the core substance of NPL-X, which exhibited the functions to restrain withdrawal symptoms.

저는 향후에 중독증과 금단현상에 대한 메커니즘을 연구함으로 해서 니코틴 중독과 유사한 메커니즘을 이루고 있는 마약이나 약물, 알코올 중독을 해소할 수 있는 방향의 연구를 지속적으로 진행할 계획입니다.

I have a plan to research the mechanism of addiction and withdrawal symptoms in order to resolve the issues of drugs and alcohol addiction that have the similar mechanisms like the addiction of nicotine.
